The dial gets the glory; the case does the work. Everything between your skin and the movement — steel, crystal, crown, gaskets — exists to keep a delicate machine safe from water, dust, knocks, and time itself.
It’s also where most of the confusing jargon lives. 316L, sapphire, ATM, screw-down, lug-to-lug — here’s all of it in plain English, so the choices in the builder feel like decisions instead of guesses.
The case: what 316L means
Nearly every good watch case, ours included, is machined from 316L stainless steel — the same marine-grade alloy used in surgical instruments and boat fittings. The “L” is low carbon, which makes it weld cleanly and resist corrosion from the saltiest thing your watch will regularly meet: you. It’s also low in the nickel-leaching behaviour that makes cheap metal itch, so sensitive skin generally wears it happily.
What changes between watches isn’t usually the steel — it’s the finishing. Polished surfaces are worked to a mirror and read as dressy; brushed surfaces carry fine parallel grain and read as sporty, and hide small scratches far better. Most of our cases mix both: polished bevels on brushed flanks, which is where those fifty-plus hours of hand-finishing per case go. Black cases get there by DLC — diamond-like carbon, a hard vapour-deposited coating that’s far tougher than paint.
Size: the two numbers that decide fit
Case diameter gets all the attention, but it’s the second number that decides whether a watch fits: lug-to-lug, the tip-to-tip length including the strap horns. If lug-to-lug exceeds the flat of your wrist, the watch will overhang and rock, whatever the diameter says.
Measure your wrist with a tape (or a strip of paper and a ruler), then use this honest map:
- Under 16 cm (6.3") — 36 mm wears perfectly; 39 mm is the assertive upper end.
- 16–18 cm (6.3–7") — the sweet spot for 39 mm; 36 mm reads elegant and vintage, 40 mm reads sporty. Most people are here, and most people are happiest at 39–40.
- Over 18 cm (7") — 40 mm sits naturally; 36 mm becomes a deliberate dress choice.
The crystal: sapphire and its rivals
The clear window over the dial comes in three materials, and the difference matters more than almost any other spec.
Acrylic (plastic) is warm-looking and shatterproof but scratches if you look at it sternly. Mineral glass resists scratches better and shatters more readily. Sapphire — synthetic corundum, grown in a lab and second only to diamond in hardness — is what every IVERA wears. Keys, desk edges, and a decade of doorframes will lose to it; a sapphire crystal generally looks new for the life of the watch.
The letters AR on a spec sheet mean anti-reflective coating, applied to the crystal’s underside so the dial stays readable in hard light instead of turning into a mirror. Under-side coating gives you the clarity without the coating itself ever meeting a scratch.
Bezels: the ring that does something
The bezel is the ring framing the crystal. On most dress watches it’s fixed and slim — pure frame, maximizing dial. On tool watches it earns its keep:
A GMT bezel, marked 1 through 24, lets the watch track a second time zone — read your home hours against it while the main hands live on local time. Our Obsidian, Nocturne, and Cascade carry it, and it remains the most useful complication ever invented for people who love someone in another time zone.
A dive bezel rotates one way only and counts elapsed minutes — originally for air supply, now mostly for parking meters and steeping tea. Utterly honest work either way.
Crown and caseback
The crown is the watch’s only door, so its design decides how weatherproof the house is. A push-pull crown seals with gaskets alone — fine for daily life. A screw-down crown threads shut against the case like a tiny submarine hatch, which is how dive watches keep water out at depth. Whichever you have: never operate the crown underwater, and if it’s a screw-down, check it’s seated before you swim.
Around the back you choose between a solid caseback — a clean steel canvas, and the natural home for an engraving (we’ll come back to why that matters in the gift guide) — or an exhibition caseback, a sapphire window onto the rotor swinging as you move. Machinery or message: both are good answers.
Water resistance, without the wishful thinking
Water-resistance ratings are laboratory pressure figures, not swimming instructions, and the industry has never been in a hurry to clarify. Here’s the truthful translation:
- 30 m / 3 ATM — rain, handwashing, splashes. Not swimming.
- 50 m / 5 ATM — a swim in the pool is fine; don’t dive off the blocks or wear it in the hot tub (heat ages gaskets faster than water pressure does).
- 100 m / 10 ATM — swimming, snorkelling, watersports without a second thought.
Rubber gaskets are the unsung heroes of all of the above, and they age like any rubber — if a watch is worn in water regularly, have the seals checked every few years when it’s serviced.
Straps: the quickest transformation in watches
Finally, the strap — the one part of a watch you can change in ten seconds, and the cheapest way to own what feels like three watches. Leather warms and creases into a record of your wear; a steel bracelet adds heft and shrugs off water; and our straps mount on standard spring bars, so nothing about your watch is ever locked in. Buy the watch for the dial and case. Collect straps for your moods.
